Tell us about yourself.
My name is Josh Shorrock, I’m the Co-Founder of LANE EIGHT. I was born in South Korea, but grew up all over the place and somehow ended up calling Hong Kong home. Sports have always been a major pillar of my life and when you get into any sport, you naturally get into the product. I’ve always had an interest in how different products perform, no matter the sport. But whether it was hockey skates or basketball shoes, footwear is what I always gravitated to the most.
Location: Hong Kong
Favorite LANE EIGHT color: Cloud White. Classic.
What does “Your Best You” mean to you?
For me, “Your Best You” means continuous improvement. It’s a process of consistent, critical self reflection, identifying the areas where you see room for improvement, and taking action to actually make those improvements. It’s usually easier said than done.
What changes in your life have you made to be more sustainable?
Over the past couple years I’ve become more and more conscious of the amount of plastic I consume. Most of the changes I’ve made are simple things like always have a water bottle, using my own coffee mug, cutting down on delivery/takeout, and just consuming less overall. When it comes to clothing, I try to make sure every purchase is going to last me at least 5 years, but I also just hate shopping. More recently I’ve been eating less red meat, but honestly, that’s mainly down to my girlfriend.
What sustainability goals do you have for this year?
My main goal is really just to be consistent with the life changes I’ve made the past couple years to reduce my impact on the planet. Without a real baseline of my personal footprint, it’s hard to set specific targets. But having said that, I know that by continuing to do the little things like reducing my plastic consumption by cutting out delivery, always having my own water bottle, taking public transport when available, etc, my overall impact will stay relatively low.
What is your favorite place on earth?
I can’t even remember anymore having not left Hong Kong for 1.5 years now! I guess my new favourite place is on this secluded beach on the south side of one of Hong Kong’s islands – Lamma island.
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Going for a good hike is definitely up there. Hong Kong may be known for its skyline and being such a densely populated city, but there are also amazing hikes scattered all around.
How do you connect with nature?
I’ve been very fortunate to be where I am during these tough times. The city has been relatively open compared to many around the world so I have been able to explore remote parts of HK that I never would have in the past. The process of exploring new parts of the outdoors has definitely given me more of a connected feeling with nature.
If you could share one message with the LANE EIGHT community, what would it be?
Start small. If you don’t already have personal goals for reducing your footprint, it’s the small habitual changes that will ultimately lead to the broader shifts in demand.
