Well its official, 2020 is over! As we get settled into 2021, we’re hopeful that this year marks the beginning of a return to some sort of normal. At LANE EIGHT, we’re starting the year with a heady dose of optimism. Why? Amidst the chaos of 2020, we’ve been inspired by stories of perseverance, honesty, and hope. So to kick things off this year, we’re launching our #YourBestYou campaign. We’ll be sharing some of our favorite stories from our community of Everyday Athletes. From how they dealt with the year that was, to fitness and wellness tips, and aspirations for the year ahead, we’re taking a deep dive into how our community is planning to be #YourBestYou in 2021.

First up is LANE EIGHT co-founder James Shorrock to share his fitness journey, and some of the challenges and hurdles the came up in the last year. From feeling burnt-out and stressed at the beginning of the year, to finding renewed focus and energy by committing to his personal health and wellness, 2020 has been a rollercoaster ride. What does “Your Best You” mean to you?

To me, Your Best You means being honest and transparent about how I feel, and realistic about the things I’m ready to do. I’m not tearing up the playbook this year and starting from scratch, instead, I’m celebrating the wins (big and small) and being honest with myself about the things I feel I’ve neglected, and addressing them in ways that are achievable and realistic given what’s going on in my life, and in the world at-large. It’s about not beating myself up over my hang-ups, but instead focusing on tangible things I can implement to do a little bit better, each and every day.

How did you discover LANE EIGHT?
I’ve known about LANE EIGHT long before it was a brand and real company – back when it was just an idea and a dream that my brother Josh and I shared for making footwear designed with real-world Everyday Athletes in mind.

How have you dealt with what 2020 has thrown at you?
2020 was a crazy year for all of us. On a business level, the start of the year was a real challenge as COVID was affecting our supply partners, meaning that all the new colors we had been planning and developing for 2020 were delayed until August! It was a nerve-wracking time for us, and for a while, it looked like our partners might go out of business, meaning we’d have no shoes at all! Luckily, we managed to pull together with our supplier and give them enough orders to keep things running until the end of the year.

On a personal level, 2020 was a year focused on personal growth. My fitness and overall health had taken a back seat while we were focused on getting LANE EIGHT off the ground, and I was finding that by the middle of the year I was feeling burnt out and exhausted. That mental exhaustion was really starting to weigh me down, and I felt that the best way to start feeling better was to really focus on my self.

I committed to adding more physical activity in my weekly routine, starting with three days in the gym, focusing on getting in 10,000 steps a day, and being more mindful of incorporating more movement and activity in my day-to-day routine. At the same time, I started to focus a lot more on the ‘recovery’ side of things, the biggest being revamping my sleep routine: no phone and email after 8pm, no screens after 9pm, and a lot more reading!

I’m also going to be a dad this year, and so now I’m really focused on making sure I feel my best self so that I’m there for my wife and baby. It’s going to be an exciting year!

How do you plan on taking on 2021?
This year, I’m continuing to build on the good habits I’ve put in place for myself to ensure that I’m feeling mentally and physically ready for life’s ups and downs.

As I’ve become more physically fit, I’m making sure that I’m also giving myself time to ensure I’m mentally fit too. Meditation is something that I’ve been talking about a lot but keep putting off. This is the year I’d like to start exploring meditation and mindfulness, and putting things into practice.

Who is someone you look up to that embraces the “Your Best You”  lifestyle and why do you look up to them?
This is a bit cheesy, but I have to say my wife Jenna. She’s got a high-pressure full-time job, is just about 7-months pregnant at the time of writing this, and has managed to oversee our apartment renovation and getting our home ready for the upcoming addition to our family. All this while also dealing with me. Not to mention the fact that she’s also been working her butt off in the gym. And she makes this all look easy! How she manages to juggle all of these is beyond me, but she’s absolutely incredible. She’s definitely my main inspiration these days!

What self-care rituals do you do to feel your best physically and mentally?
I’ve really come to enjoy early-morning workouts where I have the gym to myself, and can really wake-up before I head into the office. Another thing that I’ve started to enjoy (but also still struggle with) is stretching and mobility work. When I was younger, fitness for me was more about how I looked rather than how I’ve felt.

Now, I’m completely focused on how I feel. I don’t need a six-pack to feel good (though it would be nice) but I do need to feel comfortable and stable no matter what I’m doing, and stretching and mobility work has been a big part of this.

Mentally, I think switching up my wind-down routine after work has had the biggest effect. Detaching myself from my phone and laptop, turning off screens, and reading more has helped me not only in terms of sleep, but also in terms of preserving my sanity!

What’s your number one advice for people who are struggling with their own wellness journey?
Be transparent and honest with yourself! Really examine what it is you want to do, and why; and be really truthful with yourself about how ready you are to commit. If you find that you’re not quite there yet, really ask yourself what is holding you back. There are always going to be excuses and things that get in the way, but the biggest limitations and excuses come from within, and once we learn to get past ourselves, we quickly learn that there’s so much more we can do.

What do you love about LANE EIGHT?
I love the community of Everyday Athletes that has grown around LANE EIGHT. When Josh and I first started LANE EIGHT, it was just the two of us trying to make an impact, and to see people from all walks of life, and from all around the world, wearing LANE EIGHTS is incredibly humbling and inspiring. You guys are the fuel that keeps this fire burning.

What do you want to see in LANE EIGHT in the future?
In the future, I’d love to see more colors, more choices, and a greater positive impact on both the communities we’re in, and the environment of planet Home.

If you could share one message with the LANE EIGHT community, what would it be?
Keep being awesome! Every single one of you are an inspiration to the rest of our community, and your journeys area reminder to all of us that we’re all in the same lane!
